Ecuador secured its place in the World Cup 2026 Round of 32 after pulling off a stunning 2-1 upset victory on Thursday against group-leaders Germany. As the knockout stage bracket begins to crystallize, the Netherlands, Japan, Ivory Coast, Sweden, and Australia have also safely booked their tickets to the next round.

Heavyweight Round of 32 Clashes Locked In

The Netherlands wrapped up Group F in first place with 7 points following a commanding 3-1 victory over Tunisia. Japan finished two points behind in second after a hard-fought 1-1 draw with third-placed Sweden (4 points), meaning both sides advance simultaneously.

The group finishes have set up an incredible set of Round of 32 fixtures:

    • Netherlands vs. Morocco: The Dutch will face the 2022 World Cup semi-finalists on Monday in Monterrey, Mexico, in what promises to be an absolute blockbuster.
    • Brazil vs. Japan: Also on Monday, Japan will collide with Group C winners Brazil in a high-stakes showdown in Houston, Texas.

Ecuador Shocks Germany at MetLife Stadium

In a thrilling Group E finale at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium—the future venue for the World Cup Final on July 19—Ecuador clinched their historic victory just 13 minutes before the final whistle. Gonzalo Plata reacted quickest to poke home from close range, sealing the 2-1 win.

Germany had taken an early, controversial lead through Leroy Sané after just two minutes. However, Ecuador fought back valiantly, equalizing through Nilson Angulo before Plata’s late heroics. With 4 points, Ecuador safely advances as one of the best eight third-placed teams.

Ecuador Coach Sebastián Beccacece (45): “The importance of this win isn’t for me, it’s for the people. The players have brought immense joy to our nation. Please, let’s enjoy and celebrate this.”

Despite having already secured the top spot in Group E with prior wins over Curaçao (7-1) and Ivory Coast (2-1), German head coach Julian Nagelsmann was furious with what he called a “tactical suicide.”

Julian Nagelsmann: “We started brilliantly, but unfortunately, right after scoring, we began making tactical errors in our positioning. That made everything incredibly complicated.”

History for the “Elephants” & Pride for Curaçao

The Ivory Coast locked down the runners-up spot in Group E after eliminating Curaçao with a 2-0 win in Philadelphia, courtesy of a Nicolas Pépé brace. This marks the first time in history that the West African nation has reached the World Cup knockout rounds, following three group-stage exits between 2006 and 2014.

Meanwhile, Curaçao—the smallest nation in the tournament by population (approx. 160,000)—exited with credit and 1 point. Veteran Dutch manager Dick Advocaat praised his side’s fighting spirit against world-class opposition.

USMNT Rotates Squad Ahead of Bosnia Clash

The United States prepared for their upcoming Round of 32 clash against Bosnia and Herzegovina with a minor blemish, losing 2-3 to an already-eliminated Turkey in Los Angeles. The match drew star-studded Hollywood attendance, with actors Brad Pitt and Edward Norton spotted in the crowd.

Arda Güler, Orkun Kökçü, and Kaan Ayhan scored for Turkey, while Austin Trusty and Sebastian Berhalter found the net for the Americans. USMNT manager Mauricio Pochettino made nine changes to his starting lineup, resting key players after having already secured the top spot in the group with a prior win over Australia.

Concurrently, Australia advanced by grinding out a 0-0 draw against Paraguay in Santa Clara. While the Socceroos are safely through, Paraguay (also on 4 points) faces an anxious wait for the remaining group stage results to see if they qualify as a top third-placed team.

    Tactical Analysis & Manager Reactions

    The In-Form Dutch Side

Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands team enters the knockouts brimming with confidence after netting eight goals in their last two group games (5-1 vs Sweden, 3-1 vs Tunisia). However, Koeman warned against complacency:

Ronald Koeman: “We must prepare thoroughly for Morocco because it will be a massive game. They have immense quality and score easily. We know them well through Dutch football links.”

Japan Aims for a Repeat Against Brazil

Japan failed to usurp the top spot from the Dutch after drawing 1-1 with Sweden in Texas, despite an excellent team goal finished by Daizen Maeda. Sweden equalized via a long-range effort from Anthony Elanga to finish third.

Japan previously beat Brazil 3-2 in a friendly back in October. Manager Hajime Moriyasu expects a fierce rematch in Houston:

Hajime Moriyasu: “Because of that recent friendly, Brazil will enter this knockout match highly motivated for revenge. But we firmly believe we have the quality to win again.”
