The name Hamza Hammoud has come to the forefront in recent hours after Israeli media and Lebanese reports circulated information indicating he was the perpetrator of the infiltration operation that took place on the Lebanese-Israeli border in the Ramim Ridge area.
According to reports by Israel Army Radio, Hammoud hails from the border town of Markaba in southern Lebanon, located just about 1.5 kilometers from the Margaliot settlement and the infiltration point where the incident occurred.
According to the Israeli narrative, Hammoud managed to cross the border and reach a military zone inside Israeli territory, where a clash broke out with army forces before he was killed. The Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation (Kan) stated that his discovery happened “by chance” after a soldier spotted a suspicious individual while a military force was heading to the area following a fire report. Israeli media indicated that Hammoud was wearing a military uniform and was found in possession of a weapon and a knife. While some estimates suggested he was planning to reach a nearby settlement, Army Radio confirmed that investigations have not yet determined his organizational affiliation.
On the other hand, platforms close to Hezbollah stated that Hammoud was a fighter from the town of Markaba, noting that the Israeli army withheld his body after he was killed.
The operation has sparked widespread controversy within Israel, with local officials and media considering it evidence of security flaws along the northern border, especially since the area where the infiltration occurred is under intense military deployment and continuous surveillance. The Israeli military establishment is continuing its investigation into the circumstances of the incident, amid questions about how Hammoud managed to reach the area and how long he spent inside Israeli territory before being spotted and killed.
