    Exclusive JNews Lebanon

Through the front door of the White House, President Joseph Aoun entered to a grand presidential reception, breaking a diplomatic hiatus for a Lebanese president at the US executive mansion that had lasted since 2009. While the formal welcoming was complete with full protocol, the substance delivered staunch US backing for the Lebanese presidency’s trajectory. Yet, the high-profile optics in Washington do not conceal Lebanon’s internal political divide between those who view the summit as a strategic turning point to restore sovereignty, and those banking on derailing the Framework Agreement with Iranian backing.

White House Office Summit: Protocol Messages for Berri and a Sovereign Check for Hezbollah

The meeting featured unprecedented praise from Trump, who described Aoun as “respected by everyone” and capable of becoming “one of the finest leaders in the Middle East.” Beyond the compliments, key political messages were directed at Lebanon’s domestic front. Trump extended an olive branch toward Speaker Nabih Berri, describing him as a “good man who will join us when he sees the progress being made”—a statement echoing Berri’s own pragmatic stance prior to the visit when he welcomed any positive outcomes.

Regarding Hezbollah, Trump noted, “If the Lebanese President wants me to talk to Hezbollah, I will,” establishing a clear line: dialogue with Hezbollah remains possible, but its official gateway passes exclusively through Baabda Palace and legitimate state institutions. For his part, President Aoun emphasized that the ultimate goal is “ending the state of hostility with Israel forever,” highlighting that the Lebanese Army serves as the backbone of national stability and requires full international support.

Ground Reality in the South: The Zautar al-Gharbiya Test

Parallel to high-level diplomacy, field developments reflected early steps under the Framework Agreement as Lebanese Army units began deploying in Zautar al-Gharbiya (Nabatieh Governorate) following an Israeli drawdown from its outskirts. While Froun and Srifa remain within established security zones, Zautar al-Gharbiya served as the primary operational test for the withdrawal mechanism.

However, deployment proceeded under cautious conditions. Controlled demolitions by Israeli forces were reported in nearby Kfar Tebnit, alongside continued troop presence on strategic positions such as Ali al-Taher hill. Consequently, the army command urged residents to defer their return until the area is fully stabilized and cleared.

Yarzeh’s Demands for US General Clairfield

Military and diplomatic sources exclusively informed “Jnews Lebanon” that the arrival of US Major General Joseph Clairfield in Beirut to head the tripartite military coordination mechanism carries a strict dossier prepared by military leadership in Yarzeh.

Our sources reveal that Lebanese officers coordinating with Clairfield hold explicit instructions to reject any “incremental withdrawal” tactics aimed at stalling progress. The Lebanese delegation is demanding a firm, comprehensive timetable for Israeli troops to pull back from broad geographical areas simultaneously, backed by direct US guarantees against further strikes or incursions in zones handed over to Lebanese control.

“Military Source to Jnews: Yarzeh informed Washington that General Clairfield’s mission hinges on holding Israel to a swift withdrawal schedule. Any deliberate slowdown is an obvious maneuver that will jeopardize the pilot zones framework.”

Between full political backing in the Oval Office and strategic messages directed toward Ain el-Tineh and Haret Hreik, the real test shifts to military negotiations with General Clairfield. With President Aoun returning from Washington backed by international support, success now depends on whether US leverage can translate commitments into a complete, verifiable withdrawal on the ground.
